Outreach

Thanks to the profits generated from our conference and the vision and efforts of our board and membership, KEG has been able to develop a very well regarded outreach program over the past decade. We currently invest approximately $35,000 per year, along with countless volunteer hours, to deliver educational activities listed below.

On behalf of the KEG directors, we wish to thank the Association for Mineral Exploration (AME) for their ongoing funding and support with our Outreach activities.

Virtual Lectures in the Classroom

Times have changed, and so have we. KEG continues to utilize our guest speakers from the KEG Virtual Lecture Series to come to your classroom... virtually. Speakers can adapt lectures to age group. If you would like to have a guest speaker in your classroom, please email kamloopsexplorationgroup@gmail.com. For more information about the speakers and talks, check out our lecture series page.

Public Lecture Series

Since 2003, KEG has presented a lecture series for the general public to promote the interest of mining, earth sciences and mineral exploration.

The 2021 Lecture Series will be virtual. Check out the lecture series tab for more info.

Ask-A-Geologist
We have three Ask-A-Geologist events throughout the year. The first is in April at Meet A Machine, the second is in May during Mining Day, and the third is in November at the Kamloops Museum and Archives. This is an opportunity for the general public to bring in rocks and minerals to be identified by our volunteer geologists. There are educational displays and hands on activities for the entire family. - All events postponed due to Covid-19
Geocaching
In the past, we have teamed up with the Kamloops Museum & Archives to bring you the Kamloops Historical Geology Geocaching Tour. Although the contest is now closed, you can still take part in this fun exercise. It's perfect for all ages or a family project. We will be teaming up again in the near future to bring you a brand new tour.
Download the Questions here.
If you do not have a GPS, download the Map here.

BACKGROUND:

Minerals and mined products are all around us. This geocaching tour will introduce you to some interesting sites and uses of rocks and/or mined products in the Kamloops downtown area. It will also introduce you to some fascinating Kamloops history. It will take 2-3 hours to complete.
KEG would like to extend a huge thank you to the Kamloops Museum & Archives for their help with this geocache!

HAVE FUN & PLAY SAFE!!
School Visits
KEG has organized many class visits throughout the region with all grade levels.  We can do hands on activities and games for the younger students and have volunteer geologists and experts for the older ones. We utilize our guest speakers, who give evening talks as part of our lecture series, to visit with students. Please contact Julie Dormer, Outreach Coordinator, for more information at kamloopsexplorationgroup@gmail.com or 250.320.2411 - Class visits are virtual during Covid-19
Adopt a Geologist
Adopt a volunteer geologist for an event to speak with a group or students, give a presentation or identify rocks and minerals. If you have an event that you would like a geologist to attend, please contact Julie Dormer, Outreach Coordinator, at kamloopsexplorationgroup@gmail.com or 250.320.2411
Support for School Trips

KEG has sponsored many school trips for geology programs at TRU, SFU and UBC Okanagan. We also have sponsored individuals to embark on incredible opportunities like the http://www.studentsonice.com/

KEG is proud to have supported Justine Wild in the Students On Ice Expedition. Justine was the first from Kamloops to be accepted. She spoke to many classes, groups and was a speaker in the 2012 KEG Lecture Series to share her amazing story!

Junior Delegates Program
During the KEG Conference and Trade Show in April, the Tuesday is dedicated to elementary students. Four classes from all over the region are chosen to attend for a day of education and fun. Students take part in five activities during the day. Students will learn how to gold pan from world champion panner, Yukon Dan. They will learn all about different minerals and how to cut and polish while playing interactive games with the Logan Lake Rock Club. They will create their own rock board as well to take home. Students are asked to bring a rock from their home collection to try and stump our volunteer geologist. Students then spend time on a 'treasure hunt' throughout the trade show where they are given a book of questions and have to hunt for the answers by talking to representatives from the industry. Finally, students get the opportunity to talk with the New Gold fire and mine rescue crew while touring the fire truck.  If you are interested in having your class take part in 2022, please call the KEG Outreach Coordinator, Julie Dormer, at 250.320.2411 or kamloopsexplorationgroup@ gmail.com
Senior Delegates Program
During the KEG Conference and Trade Show in April, the Wednesday is dedicated to high school students. Students take part in several activities during the half-day program. We start the day with a round table discussion where students are able to hear from several young professionals in a variety of positions in the mining and exploration industry. Students have the opportunity to speak with and ask questions as well. Students also learn from world champion gold panner, Yukon Dan. They spend the remainder of their day walking throughout the trade show speaking with different representatives in the industry. Feedback from students and teachers have been positive. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get insight for a possible career. For more information about having you or your class become Senior Delegates during the 2022 KEG Conference, please call the KEG Outreach Coordinator, Julie Dormer, at 250.320.2411 or kamloopsexplorationgroup@ gmail.com
